Our journey to Costa Rica began with all the excitement and uncertainty that comes with moving to a new country. As a missionary family, we knew that challenges would be part of our path, but we were also confident in God's provision every step of the way.
Upon landing in Costa Rica, our first challenge became apparent as we picked up our rental car only to realize that it was too small for our family and all our luggage. After some frantic discussions, broken conversations in our limited Spanish, issues with the bank thinking there was credit card fraud, and two hours later, we finally secured a second car that accommodated all of us and our belongings. This unexpected hiccup, though stressful at the time, taught us early on to be flexible and patient.
Our arrival coincided with the looming threat of a cyclone in Guanacaste, though thankfully it veered away, leaving behind heavy rains that flooded many roads. Despite the weather challenges, we safely made our way to San Jose, where our Airbnb awaited us in the heart of the city. The cozy atmosphere, complete with an outside patio nestled within the house, immediately felt like a welcoming refuge after a long journey.
(This is inside the house, people!!)
One of our first memorable experiences in Costa Rica was discovering a charming cafĂ© on the corner near our Airbnb, where we enjoyed our inaugural gallo pinto breakfast—a quintessential Costa Rican dish that became an instant favorite among our family. We hope you enjoyed having a taste of that with us at our Experience Costa Rica night.
However, our accommodation journey took a turn when we moved to our next Airbnb for a month-long stay. What we found was far from ideal—so many bugs, malfunctioning wifi, uncomfortably hard beds, and strict rules regarding electricity usage. Moreover, the landlord proved to be creepy, unreliable, and dishonest, attempting to deceive the Airbnb company. Fortunately, due to these issues, we were able to terminate our contract early without financial penalty.
God's hand was evident as we quickly found a beautiful home that exceeded our expectations in every way and fit perfectly within our budget. We were so excited to have a porch space big enough to host pastors for meetings. We will not have to buy any furniture or kitchen essentials as it was all included. We even have room to sleep 16! Who is ready for a visit?
Moving into our new home was delayed by a day, prompting an impromptu beach vacation to fill the gap. It turned out to be a much-needed respite for our weary souls, offering a bug-free environment and breathtaking views that rejuvenated us.
Reflecting on our first week in Costa Rica, we are reminded of God's faithfulness through every twist and turn. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, His provision and protection have been evident at every step. Our journey here is just beginning, and we are filled with gratitude for the warm hospitality of Costa Rica and the countless blessings we have already experienced.
As we continue our mission work in this beautiful country, we look forward to embracing the adventures, lessons, and moments of joy that await us. Costa Rica has already become a special place in our hearts—a land where God's goodness and grace are desperately needed. Please pray for the guiding of our steps as we serve and share His love with those around us.
