A Tale of Beauty and Challenge

 Greetings, friends and family!

We are writing to share a glimpse into our incredible, yet deeply challenging missionary journey here in Costa Rica. As we navigate this vibrant country, we encounter an array of breathtaking landscapes, mixed with stark realities that reveal the struggles faced by many. Our time here has been a journey of discovery, hope, and, at times, heartache.

The Enchanting Beauty of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is often hailed as a paradise for its stunning natural beauty. From the magical turquoise waters of the Rio Celeste to the awe-inspiring ocean views framed by majestic mountains and active volcanoes, the landscape is truly mesmerizing. The rolling hills and lush rainforest create a tapestry of green that is both calming and invigorating.

The Rio Celeste, in particular, is a wonder to behold. It had me, Carrie, totally geeking out about this scientific treasure. Its vibrant blue hue is the result of a natural chemical reaction, creating a river that seems almost otherworldly. The diversity of wildlife here is equally impressive, with countless species of birds, mammals, and insects cohabiting in this rich ecosystem. Every day offers a new chance to marvel at nature's artistry.

The Reality Beneath the Surface

Yet, beyond the picturesque scenery lies a reality that is often less visible but deeply affecting. Many of the homes we visit are constructed from the most economical materials available, often corrugated steel panels. While some have finished floors, others make do with dirt underfoot. Basic amenities are a luxury for many, and while glass windows are the norm,  many homes still rely on shutters for protection.

The disparity extends to the education system, particularly in environmental awareness. Despite Costa Rica's global reputation for its environmental efforts, there is a significant lack of education on protecting the rainforest. The absence of trash services in many areas exacerbates the issue, leaving heaps of garbage scattered in open spaces.

Stray dogs are another heart-wrenching sight that pulls on our hearts. Many are severely undernourished, with their ribs visibly protruding. These animals wander the streets, a stark reminder of the broader issues of poverty and neglect that affect both humans and animals alike.

I recorded a quick video on one of our trips to the city. This is one of the nicer areas near our home.  You can see that most of the businesses and homes are well-built. This is not the reality for a lot of Costa Rica. The bars on the windows are a sad reminder of their desperation to feel peace and safety within their own homes.

The Struggle Behind the Tourism

As we venture beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, we are confronted with the harsh realities of life for many Costa Ricans. The darker aspects of drug abuse, witchcraft, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness are ever-present in many communities. These challenges are compounded by a lack of resources and support systems.

Our mission here is to bring hope and as much tangible help as we can to these communities. We are working to support initiatives that share the hope found in Jesus, grow the church, and offer a lifeline to those struggling with addiction and despair. It is a daunting task, but we believe that even small acts of kindness and support can make a significant difference.

A Call for Prayer and Support

We ask for your continued prayers and support as we continue this journey. The road ahead is filled with challenges, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to making an impact for Jesus. Your prayers are a source of strength and encouragement for us as we strive to be a beacon of hope amid adversity.

Please continue to pray for the sale of our Texas home. The market is not in our favor right now and we need things to move quickly.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, both in spirit and in action. Your support means the world to us, and together, we can work towards a brighter future for the people of Costa Rica.

With heartfelt gratitude and hope,

The Hobbs Family
